Future Biotech Leader Scholarship Application Guidelines

Awardees attending an in-state institution of higher learning are awarded a $2,500 scholarship while those attending an out-of-state institution are awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2026 at 11:59 PM

Eligibility: Students in 11th and 12th grade who participate in the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa

Page Limit: Two pages including any table, images, or figures.

Title: Very brief, but descriptive title.

Introduction: One short paragraph that describes:

• the question your experiment hopes to answer
• why this question is interesting/important
• any background information or initial observations

Hypothesis: One to two sentences to describe what you think the outcome of your experiment will be.

Materials and Methods: One to three paragraphs that describe your experiment in detail:  

• what did you do
• what materials did you use,
• how did you collect your data, how long did it take, etc.  
• (optional) drawings or photographs, if appropriate

Data and Results: Provide a summary of observations and data, if appropriate in table, chart, and/or graph formats. Be sure to label tables, charts, and graphs with titles, legends, X and Y axis labels, etc. You may include drawings, diagrams, or photographs, if appropriate.

Conclusion: One to two paragraphs considering the below questions.

• Was your hypothesis correct? What in your data and results led you to this decision?
• If your results did not provide enough evidence to accept or reject our hypothesis, what would you change for a second experiment?
• Did you make any mistakes in conducting the experiment, and if so, how would you fix such mistakes if you were to conduct your experiment again?  
• What are the impact of your results in the question you raised in the introduction?
